‘This is America’ Makes History, Winning Top Awards At Grammys

History was made at the 61st Grammy Awards on Sunday, which was filmed in Los Angeles.
According to Reuters, for the first time in its over 60 year history, a rap track won both record and song of the year.
Childish Gambino’s “This is America” is the first hip-hop track to win either of the top Grammy categories— snagging record and song of the year. The song is about police brutality and racism.
Glover was among a large group of rappers who decided to boycott the Grammy’s due hip-hop artists being snubbed in the past.
Reuters explains, “….when socially incisive rap material lost out to pop or R&B at the highest honors in the music business.”
Songwriter Ludwig Goransson worked with Gambino on the track and accepted the awards on his behalf. “This is America” also took home Grammys for best music video and best rap performance.
Goransson said, “It speaks to people, it calls out injustice, celebrates life and reunites us all at the same time.”
