Stevens Point partners with Maui, Hawaii | Top Stories | – WAOW

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WAOW)– Stevens Point and the Island of Maui, Hawaii may be thousands of miles away, but they are joining forces to share opportunities and cultures.
Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza and Maui Mayor Mike Victorino made the connection official by signing a proclamation that they will stay connected.
“We live in our Central Wisconsin communities and when we get out we get to see how other people have had other solutions to problems or how they do things differently. We’re all in this together,” Wiza said.
The bond between mayors forming through Sentry Insurance’s sponsorship of the Tournament of Champions, which helps fund charitable giving on the island and in Central Wisconsin.
“Sentry’s impact on the community of Maui and the community of Stevens Point will last generations to come because of their commitment and involvement,” Wiza said.
Sentry’s CEO said Maui has become a special place for the company and he’s excited to see where the connection goes.
“It’s good for people in a small town to realize there are people halfway around the world that have more in common with them than dissimilar,” said Pete McPartland, Sentry Insurance Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO.
The initiative is also bringing together education, with the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and the University of Hawaii Maui partnering to provide opportunities for their students.
“Sharing of life, culture, beliefs, understandings, most importantly sharing what you know and learning from what someone else who lives four thousand miles away from you can teach you. We can all learn,” Victorino said.
The mayors expressed their gratitude for Sentry opening doors and paving the way.
“To all of you I say ‘mahalo,’ God bless you, stay safe, stay healthy, and in Hawaii we say ‘A Hui Hou,’ until we meet again,” Victorino said.
The mayors said this is just the beginning and plan to visit one another in person when it is safe to do so.
