Microsoft surprised everyone last night by shadow dropping Serious Sam 4 on Game Pass with little fanfare. The release was confirmed with a tweet from the @XboxGamePass Twitter account, which has since been taken down. It actually feels like weird timing to release it today, one day before the release of Halo Infinite’s campaign, so it’s possible the game went live on the service early by mistake and was supposed to be a reveal at The Game Awards.
If you don’t have an active Xbox Game Pass subscription, the game can also be purchased from the Microsoft Store on both Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC. We’d suggest you pick up the Serious Sam 4 Launch Bundle, as it will also give you the Serious Sam Collection — also known as Serious Sam 1 HD, Serious Sam 2 HD, and Serious Sam 3: BFE.
Yeah, Serious Sam is on Game Pass. You should play it, because the shooter series is very good. That’s why there are four of them.
Serious Sam 4 is a first-person shooter game developed by Croteam. Originally called Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, the game is a prequel to Serious Sam 3: BFE. It tells another story about Sam and the Earth Defense Force as they fend off hordes of alien invaders.
Croteam and Devolver Digital describe the plot of Serious Sam 4 on the store page as follows:
“Humanity is under siege as the full force of Mental’s hordes spread across the world, ravaging what remains of a broken and beaten civilization. The last remaining resistance to the invasion is the Earth Defence Force led by Sam “Serious” Stone and his heavily-armed squad of misfit commandos.
Croteam returns with a high-powered prequel to the Serious Sam series that scales up chaos to unprecedented levels. The classic Serious Sam formula is revamped by putting an unstoppable arsenal up against an unimaginable number of enemies that requires players to circle-strafe and backpedal-blast their way out of impossible situations.”
Serious Sam 4 released in August 2020, but was previously exclusive to Google Stadia and PC. Much like Serious Sam 3: BFE the entire game can be played in 4 player co-op, so Xbox Game Pass makes it an easy sell to friends that might want to shoot aliens with you. We’re glad to see it on there.
