Celebrating new year on the slopes – WAOW

RIB MOUNTAIN, Wis. (WAOW) — Ending the year out on the slopes: that’s what many decided to do this year, using their final hours of 2021 chasing adventure at Granite Peak.
“I have this trip once per year, and it’s always a great time,” Abby Frieder from Whitefish Bay said.
Some people made the trip to Rib Mountain as part of tradition, like Frieder, some made the trip for the first time.
“I mean, for snowboarding in Wisconsin, this is by far the best there is out there, so it’s been a great day,” Mason Jahn from Waupun said.
Beyond journeying down the hills, some have much more reason to celebrate.
“I just beat leukemia. All my summer went into it and now I’m just excited to be back out here and shred the slopes,” Kurtis Delosh of Merrill said.
Those struggles could have had him curse this year. Now, he has a new lease on life.
“I’m happy to get on my way to a new beginning with this new year and just keep living life,” Delosh said.
As for the party at Granite Peak, it started early and continued into the night, with favorable weather accompanying.
“The weather’s warm and there’s some good snow, so we’re having a good time, trying to close out 2021,” Jahn said.
With all the uncertainty 2021 gave us, it ended with a bang, as fireworks helped round off the night on the slopes.
“Nowhere else I’d rather be on a beautiful New Year’s,” Delosh said.
